Department of Labor Announces Partnership with Facebook to Provide New Social Media Resource for Jobseekers

U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis held a press conference this morning to announce a partnership between the Department of Labor, Facebook, the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (“NASWA”), Direct Employers Association (“DEA”), and the National Association of Colleges and Employers to provide a Facebook page to help connect veterans and other job seekers and employers.  Secretary Solis indicated that there are three million jobs that are currently open and that many of these jobs are not being filled because employers cannot find the right jobseekers with the right skills to fill the positions.  She explained that the new Facebook tool will help connect 132 million Americans to job postings, resources, and other tools that they need to find the right jobs for them, including direct links to the partnership organizations’ sites.  Secretary Solis announced that DOL also has plans to partner with other social media sites in the future, such as LinkedIn and Twitter, to provide other tools and avenues to job seekers.

It is anticipated that these new social media sites will help employers, including contractors, communicate more effectively with veterans and attract more diverse applicant pools.  Contractors should consider participating in these DOL-endorsed sites to augment their diversity and affirmative action efforts.
